On our flight from 18 Jan 2020 (VGT3) we had an experiment with a high level of complexity: an attempt to achieve balloon astronomy by taking photos of the Moon though a medium-long focal lens and a mirrorless camera from the nacelle. The Wikipedia page for "balloon-borne telescopes" keeps track of various similar experiments some dating back to 1957 - project Skyhook. To our knowledge, it's the first time such an experiment was attempted in Romania.
To achieve this target a simplified reaction wheel stabilization system was implemented + a camera tilt control depending on the time and moon altitude. The focus was performed manually on the ground by using a distant tree, take into account o that day it was fog and cloudy.
The camera used was Z CAM E1 and the lense we set to 103mm focal length
The maximum altitude from where we got a decent picture was 18.3Km
Pictures are copied directly from the camera: no processing was done
