The ROM-3 satellite, a PocketQube crafted by the high school team RomSpace, was launched aboard SpaceX’s ninth dedicated smallsat rideshare program mission, Transporter-9, on November 11th. In collaboration with Alba Orbital, this launch on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket represents Romania's second venture into satellite missions, following the high school team's initial success with the ROM-2 satellite.

ROM-3, a demonstration mission following its predecessor 'Romanian Orbital Mission 2,' enhances RomSpace's pico-satellite design with improved camera resolution and higher efficiency solar panels. With an average team member age ranging from 15 to 18 years old, RomSpace pioneers affordable opportunities for educational institutions, exemplified by the International Computer High School of Bucharest.

The ROM-3 satellite, a 50 x 50 x 100mm picosat, sets forth with three primary missions. Its primary function involves acting as an amateur radio digipeater, allowing operators to upload messages for a one-time transmission back to the Earth. The secondary mission entails transmitting a low-resolution SSDV image in GFSK Mode, inviting active participation from amateur radio operators. The tertiary mission includes CW Beacon transmission, aiding in detecting the satellite's presence and measuring signal properties.

The UHF downlink (IARU coordinated frequency of 436.235 MHz) with 20 wpm CW, 500bps GFSK telemetry, and 5kbps GFSK SSDV will position ROM-3 as a notable contributor to the amateur radio community. Felicitari inca o data echipei de elevi Rom-Space, au deja al doilea satelit lansat pe orbita, putem spune ca au monopol pe Romania in industria spatiala .

Stiu ca nu sunt prea elegant, insa mi-as fi dorit sa vad ceva mai multe informatii din partea echipei, sa ne tina la curent din cand in cand cu ce au reusit, pe site-ul lor. In sensul ca au trecut cateva saptamani de la lansare, si echipa invita radioamatorii sa contacteze satelitul, iar detaliile tehnice (TLE, protocol, beacon, functionalitate) mi se par reduse sau insuficiente. De exemplu, informatiile de pe site nu sunt actualizate nici macar pentru ROM-2. Chiar va rog sa-mi indicati un link sau un paragraf care sa descrie utilizarea lui ROM-3 de catre radioamatori (mai util si mai clar mi se pare textul adaugat de YO8TLC).

Inteleg ca este un grup de radioamatori (parca de la Timisoara? sau Arad?) care ii ajuta, insa acest lucru am impresia ca formeaza un grup separat, cu acces la mai multe informatii, desi unul din scopul misiunii este de a fi deschis tuturor radioamatorilor, prin facilitatea "amateur radio digipeater, allowing operators to upload messages for a one-time transmission back to the Earth".

Cu toate acestea, le urez cat mai multe succese pentru ca au fost (si inca sunt) pe un drum foarte dificil, cu multe provocari, insa au demonstrat ca se descurca foarte bine! Iar ambitia lor nu se opreste aici, sunt incantat de misiunile Skyline ce urmeaza destul de curand, cu siguranta.

Two New Digitpeating Amateur Radio Satellites Approved

The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) has coordinated two European digipeating satellites that are scheduled to launch in fall 2023. At the Technical University of Košice in Slovakia, satellite Veronika, a 1U CubeSat, is scheduled for launch on a Falcon 9 launcher on the Transporter 9 mission in October 2023.

The satellite will be equipped with a 24/7 digipeater on two different bands, as well as experimental slow-scan digital video (SSDV) transmissions. There is an education and outreach mission planned to involve Slovak grammar and high schools, and to transmit special CW and AX.25 messages on several special occasions. The satellite will be equipped with a novel Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) subsystem, including electromagnetic actuators and a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver. This will also help to identify the satellite during the first days and weeks of orbit.

The satellite will communicate using Spacemanic's well-known Murgas transceivers (BDSat-1, BDSat-2, Planetum-1). Altogether, Veronika will provide: AX.25 telemetry, a CW beacon, a digipeater, AX.25 and CW messages on special occasions for community engagement, experimental SSDV transmissions, SatNOGS integration, a decoder, and a dashboard. A downlink on 436.680 MHz has been coordinated, and it will use 9k6 G3RUH AX.25 and a CW beacon. A SpaceX launch on the Transporter 9 mission will send the satellite to a 500/600-kilometer polar orbit.

The Romanian Federation of Amateur Radio (FRR) is preparing the ROM-3 for launch in October or November 2023. ROM-3 is a 50 x 50 x 100-millimeter picoSAT with three missions and objectives. Its primary mission is to act as a digital amateur radio repeater. Its secondary mission is to transmit low-resolution SSDV images in a Gaussian frequency shift keying (GFSK) mode. The tertiary mission is to transmit a CW beacon that will help amateur radio operators detect the presence of the satellite and measure basic properties of the signals, such as its strength, fading due to spinning, and Doppler to measure speed. A downlink on 436.235 MHz has been coordinated for 20 WPM on CW, 500 (bps) GFSK telemetry, and 5 (kBps) GFSK SSDV. A SpaceX launch will send ROM-3 into a 500-kilometer polar orbit.
